    Booze

    Alright here's a discussion starter.

Is it ok for a Christian to drink alcohol? Clearly this is a topic that has the church divided. You can go from getting the evil eye in some groups for holding a beer. I was at a musical function at a church, at a gathering after the performance, they served sherry.

    What does the Word say?

"And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit" - Eph 5:18

Some groups have gone so far as to claim  that the "wine" in the bible was grape juice.

    Discuss..Smile

    Re: Booze

Allright, at the risk of clubbing an expired equine, I'll take a swing.

Leviticus 10:9 "Do not drink wine or strong drink, neither you nor your sons with you, when you come into the tent of meeting, so that you will not die—it is a perpetual statute throughout your generations,"  Clearly a warning directed towards the priests.  Don't come to work drunk.  It seems to imply that the Isrealites were already drinking wine and strong drink, but God wanted his priests to be clear headed when they offered the sacrifices for the people and performed their duties before God, to be set apart and holy.  Drinking until drunk was a pretty common practice for other false religions.

Deuteronomy 14:22-29 Be grateful for what God has provided for you...including wine and "strong drink", but be moderate when consuming.

Judges 13 Samson's mother is told to abstain from wine and strong drink while she is pregnant with Samson because he will be a Nazarite, set apart for God's use.

Proverbs 20:1 "Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, And whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise" (all things in moderation)

Ecclesiastes 9:7 "Go then, eat your bread in happiness and drink your wine with a cheerful heart; for God has already approved your works."

Isaiah 5:11 "Woe to those who rise early in the morning that they may pursue strong drink, Who stay up late in the evening that wine may inflame them!" (again, drinking until you're drunk is clearly a bad thing)

Habakkuk 2:15 "Woe to you who make your neighbors drink, Who mix in your venom even to make them drunk So as to look on their nakedness!" (don't force anyone else to get drunk)

Luke 1:8-15 John the Baptist is going to be a prophet, set apart and Holy for God's use and is not allowed to drink wine or strong drink.

Romans 13 and 14:  People who worshiped Diana and other godesses got drunk and had sex with the temple prostitutes.  The meat from the animals sacrificed at the temple were sold in markets close to the temples.  Paul is basicaly saying "Look, some of your new brothers and sisters in Christ just gave up this lifestyle.  If you don't have a problem with it, eat the meat that was offered to a false god.  You and I know these false gods are nothing, but if one of your new brothers or sisters has a conviction about it, don't offer it to them, don't eat it or drink in front of them.  Don't do anything that will cause them to stumble."

1 Timothy 3:8 "Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted to much wine or fond of sordid gain"  Church leaders shouldn't be alcoholics.

I think I see a pattern.  If you're going to drink, drink in moderation.  Getting drunk makes you do stupid things and can lead to sinful behavior, don't let it ruin your witness.  The world seems to hold us to a higher standard.  If anyone has a problem with it, don't drink in front of them just because you can.  Don't force anyone to drink that has a problem with with alcohol.  If you have a problem with Christians that drink, please don't yell at them and call them sinners.  God's grace is a wonderful thing, don't abuse it.

So my question is, what would you do if you see one of your Christian bothers or sisters drunk?

KW Pretty much nailed it.  There is no scriptural prohibition against alcohol - only against drunkennes.  Besides that, from what I understand about Middle Eastern culture, when a Hebrew writer would think about "drunkenness", he would be thinking of being sloppy-down-and-nasty drunk.  As BeProf put it, fershnickered.

It's too bad we are all likeminded on our interpretation of the Word when it comes to drinking. It makes debate kind of hardSmile Yet in the church (at least some denominations in the American church) there is a stigma against drinking. Why is that? Do people just not read their Bibles?

    Re: Booze

If it makes you feel better, I will never be able to convince my mother that alcohol is not of "teh debol"...even with the verses I referenced.  I think her main reason is because her brother went on a week long drinking binge after their dad died and alcoholism tends to run on her side of the family.  My mom does not allow any alcohol in their house.  My dad gave up drinking beer when I was 3 or 4.  I don't know if he volunteered to give it up, or was forced.  To keep the peace so to speak, I don't drink around my mom, even in my own house when they come out to visit.  Now, my dad, Smile will turn his hearing aid off at a wedding reception before he downs the champaigne toast while my mom gives him the evil eye for not taking the sparkling apple cider.  One of these days, I think my dad and I are going to have to sneak out of the house so we can finally have a beer together as father and son.

It's the borderline-Pharasiacal mindset of modern-day America, methinks.  Certain sins like drinking (which really isn't sin; drunkenness is), homosexuality, and playing cards while humming Stryper tumes :D are taboo, especially in my Baptist neck o' the woods. :o

It's the fault of that crazy Jack Chick, I tell ya.  HA HAWW!!!

Carry on, wayward son! Lay your weary head to rest--don't you cry no more!!

"Hide the beer, the Pastor's here"

We had a cookout here for 4th of July where I had some alcohol available. My Mother and Father in-law were there, and the thought crossed my mind of what they would think about me having it. They didn't have a problem with it.

There's a fine line between being sensitive to not "causing your brother to stumble" and paranoia.
